Fundraising Events & Activities 2011*

  • Bagging Groceries at Waitrose - 21 December 2011

Members of WADRA volunteered to bag groceries at Waitrose on the 21st of December and collected donations for their efforts. The residents of Caversham were in a very generous mood and we collected £527 on the day!

  • Metal Recycling in Collaboration with Reading Festival

In collaboration with Reading Festival, 20 young volunters (18-19 year olds) spent the two days after the Festival (29th and 30th of August) collecting and recycling metal left by Fesitval Goers. This was our first year and we learned a lot about how to make the best of this opportunity to raise funds and help the community. We collected enough metal to raise £475 and will be looking to increase this sum in 2012 by coordinating the effort more efficiently and also looking to collect items that we can sell at one of our  Car Boot Sales.

  • 4-Day Metal Recycling in the Community

To help raise funds  for the regeneration of the Mapledurham Pavilion and Community Hall we ran a metal recycling drive for a 4 day period in August (18th-21st). We asked local residents to donate scarp metal and any metal items they no longer wanted or needed. This included a vast variety of items from pots and pans, filing cabinets, washers and dryers, tables and chairs, shelves, trailers, tanks, old tools, fencing, aerials, bicyles, cabling, stoves... you name it, we probably recycled it!

Over the four-day period we had a metal recycling skip available at the Pavilion Car Park and also offered a pick up service for large items or for those who where not able to get the items to us. We were also able to salvage a large number of items, such as working appliances, garden tools, household items, bicycles, and garden furniture and sell them on at the Car Boot Sale we ran on the 20th of August.

This event proved to be very successful and popular with the Community and we raised over £2000 thanks to the contributions from the community and the very hard work Bob O'Neil and Steve Ayres who volunteered to make collections of items during the four-day period. We will be running more recycling drives in 2012 and you will receive a flyer through your door to let you know the dates.

  • Car Boot Sales

£Bob O'Neil in conjunction with the fund raising committee for the Kings Meadow Baths have run a number of successful Car Book Sales throughout 2011. We have had a very good response from the community and the popularity of the sales is growing. Over 2011 we raised approximately £880 via Car Boot Sales.

  • Dinner Dance (including ticket sales, raffle, auction, and donations)

£On the 10th of June, WADRA hosted a Dinner Dance, Raffle, and Auction at the Caversham Heath Golf Club. Many of the residents and local Caversham Traders showed their support by either attending, offering items for the raffle or auction, or cash donations. The event was attended by approximately 80 people who enjoyed a bubbly reception sponsored by Elegant Homes, followed by a three course meal, a very lively auctioned run by John Holland  of Thimlbleby and Shorland, and dancing until midnight. All in all a very enjoyablel evening  and we raised over £3000!
